BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Northwood programs provide traditional summer experiences for learning challenged and high functioning autistic children. A structured, non-competitive setting enables our staff to concentrate on the instruction and reinforcement of age-appropriate social skills while campers enjoy a wide variety of traditional camping activities. 2:1 camper/ counselor ratio ensures individualization and success.
SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPERS: Northwood uses the traditional activities of summer camp to create a supportive and vibrant social community for our unique campers. Formal social skills training and academic support are woven into the camp curriculum.
CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Weightloss, Swimming, Tennis, Waterfront/Aquatics, Sailing, Dance, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Team Sports, Computers, Technology, Academics, Theater, Musical Theater, Fine Arts/Crafts, and more. Social Skills Instruction, Volleyball, Archery, Softball, Rocketry, Tubing, Paddle Boarding, Fishing, Fort Building, Kayaking, Daily Academic Support.
CAMP LOCATION: We are located 30 minutes north of Utica, NY on a 9 mile lake just at the southwest corner of New York State's Adirondack Park. Our 40 acre campus is nestled in the woods along beautiful Hinckley Reservoir.
CAMP FACILITIES: Each of our cabins is equipped with complete bathrooms/ showers, electricity, porches and plenty of space. (No bunk beds!) Cabins are designed to hold between 5-8 campers with a minimum of 3 staff members living in each cabin so that we can maintain our 2:1 camper counselor ratio.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Located along a secluded nine-mile lake in the Adirondacks of New York State is a private/ independent seven-week residential camp for 130 children from across the United States and around the world. Camp Northwood is oriented toward children with low self-esteem, immature social skill development, high functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome and learning challenges in need of a structured and supportive, socially therapeutic summer experience. Northwood's program, developed and supervised by an outstanding staff of special educators, focuses on the development of independence, social skills, self-image and the maintenance of academic skills.
Each Northwood camper participates in a fully non-competitive, socially oriented, main-streamed styled camp program. A camper/ counselor ratio of 2:1 provides a high level of individualization at activities and in the cabin setting insuring success. In addition to traditional camp activities, each child participates in an individually designed academic program intended to help maintain current skill levels throughout the summer season. Northwood campers are exposed to a variety of social experiences designed to foster age-appropriate social skill development. Group social skill sessions and constant reinforcement within the cabin setting cultivate growth in each camper's ability to work as part of a team, interpret social situations and feel a sense of inclusion in the camp community.
